Could the Chiefs Part Ways with Trey Smith After Using the Tag?
The Chiefs acted quickly, placing a non-exclusive franchise tag on guard Trey Smith prior to the March 4 deadline. However, this doesn’t guarantee that he’ll stay in Kansas City for the upcoming season. The team brought a similar situation to life with L’Jarius Sneed last year, eventually trading him to the Titans shortly afterward. With the non-exclusive tag, Smith can negotiate with other franchises, but if he signs elsewhere, a hefty price of two first-round picks must go to the Chiefs.
Even with his impressive track record, it's unlikely that any team will meet that pricey demand. Kansas City's past experiences with the non-exclusive tag suggest that franchises may not have to part with two first-rounders to acquire the All-Pro guard, as evidenced by Tennessee's trade involving a third-round pick for Sneed last March. The potential cost of trading for Smith could be high, but establishing a price is complicated since teams rarely part ways with top-tier guards in their prime. Shaq Mason's trade from New England to Tampa Bay for a fifth-round pick in 2022 and Gabe Jackson's move from the Raiders to the Seahawks for the same compensation in 2021 serve as recent examples. Both were solid players, yet neither matched Smith's talent level nor was as young. A second-round selection could serve as a starting point in negotiations.
