Game Changer: Chiefs Land a Potential Top-10 Star in Josh Simmons!

Kansas City’s Bright Future at Left Tackle 🌟

After four tumultuous seasons experimenting with different players at the left tackle position, the Kansas City Chiefs appear to have that pivotal piece for the long term.

A Strategic Move in the NFL Draft 🎉

On Thursday night, following a trade-back arrangement with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs made a significant selection with the No. 32 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft—Ohio State's left tackle Joshua Simmons.

Draft experts speculated about Simmons' fate leading up to the big night, especially considering the torn patellar injury he sustained during a game against the Oregon Ducks on October 12. Most acknowledged that under normal circumstances, he would have been picked much earlier, potentially in the top 10 selections, had it not been for the injury.

Comprehensive Medical Evaluation 🩺

In light of his injury, the Chiefs' personnel and medical teams proceeded to gather information about Simmons, meeting with him at the NFL Scouting Combine in March.

“Right from the Combine, we were aware of the patellar tendon injury,” recalled General Manager Brett Veach while addressing local media after Round 1. “These types of injuries are serious, typically requiring a six-to-seven-month recovery. Early on, our head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder mentioned that the knee looked promising post-surgery. So, I asked if it would be beneficial to bring him in for an update. He agreed, and the news only got better from there.”

To gain further insight, the Chiefs organized a top-30 visit for Simmons, allowing him to bond with offensive line coach Andy Heck. Multiple Zoom calls were also held during the recruitment process to gauge Simmons' football intelligence.

While many teams were interested in Simmons, he noted that the Chiefs' interest stood out clearly. “A lot of teams reached out, but nobody matched the Chiefs,” Simmons shared during a press conference. “I had several meetings scheduled, but Kansas City demonstrated the greatest commitment.”

After suffering the injury, Simmons was proactive about his rehabilitation. He underwent surgery and collaborated with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to formulate a detailed recovery plan.

“We identified the nature of the injury and the attention it required,” Simmons explained. “The rehab is packed with eccentric work to strengthen the joint and enhance range of motion. Starting this process early is crucial for quickening your comeback and regaining explosiveness. This means squats, single-leg exercises, and a focus on the kinetic chain to get back into form.”

Progress Towards Training Camp 🚀

Fast forward six months, and Simmons feels optimistic about his progress. He reports being able to squat heavy weights and perform sled drills effectively. While the Chiefs are cautious and plan to monitor Simmons closely during rookie minicamp and organized team activities (OTAs), the consensus is that he will be fit to participate when training camp kicks off.

Nevertheless, Simmons acknowledges the road ahead is demanding. “I still need to push hard in recovery. Now that I'm part of the Chiefs, every moment counts. There’s no time to slack off. After taking a brief moment to absorb everything, I’ll dive straight into a well-structured football program.”

A Promising Left Tackle for the Future 🌈

The Chiefs are coming off a streak of reaching seven consecutive AFC title games, which places them at the end of the first round of yearly drafts—definitely not the ideal scenario for securing a top-tier left tackle.

“It was a clear need for us, and strong left tackles don’t often become available,” Veach elaborated. “In free agency, it’s rare for players of this caliber to hit the market. Sometimes it takes an unexpected injury or circumstance for talent like Simmons to slip through.”

Veach further acknowledged that Simmons' unfortunate circumstances may have contributed to the Chiefs acquiring a player of his caliber. “We identified only 14 or 15 potential first-round picks. Simmons found himself in a unique position due to his injury, which added a rehab component to his evaluation. But he was absolutely on our radar and made perfect sense for our team.”

Before Kansas City finalized their selection, quarterback Patrick Mahomes sent a smiley-face emoji from his official X account. 📱

Although he didn’t utter a word, the two-time NFL MVP expressed a vast amount through that simple gesture.

Veach remarked, “When Pat stays upright, our arsenal of talented players shines. We're thrilled about our offensive options, including Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, and Xavier Worthy. Keeping him protected and in rhythm is crucial; he’s our most valuable asset.”

A New Era Begins 🌟

The Kansas City Chiefs have successfully bolstered their offensive line with a devoted left tackle for the future—who they believe may also step right in and contribute immediately.

Fans can look forward to an elevated level of excitement as they watch offensive linemen practice in St. Joseph as the new season approaches! 🏈🔥
