However, their leases with Jackson County are set to expire in January 2031, leading both franchises to explore options for their futures over recent years. Last year, Jackson County voters turned down a sales tax extension designed to finance an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium and a $2 billion ballpark district for the Royals in downtown Kansas City.

The lack of proactive support from Missouri officials has prompted Kansas lawmakers to authorize bonds covering up to 70% of new stadium costs in their state. The Royals have even secured a mortgage for property in Kansas while also exploring other possible sites in Missouri.
