Inside the Tension: How Chiefs’ Andy Reid Strategizes Playing Time Ahead of the Thrilling Preseason Opener!

Chiefs Training Camp: The Road to Preseason Begins 🏈

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs recently wrapped up Day 14 of training camp practice, setting the stage for their highly anticipated preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals this Saturday.

Preseason Preparations: A Familiar Approach

As fans gear up for the new football season, Coach Andy Reid has made it clear that the starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, along with other key players, will have limited participation in the preseason. This has become a familiar trend over the years.

“We structure it based on the quarterbacks, so they’ll each get a quarter,” Reid shared. “Pat (Mahomes) goes first, then (Gardner) Minshew, followed by (Bailey) Zappe, and finally Chris (Oladokun) at the end.”

With this plan in place, it’s crucial for fans to not miss a moment when Mahomes hits the field, as his time is likely to be short yet impactful. Since stepping into the starting role in 2018, he has routinely seen one or two series during the preseason.

For instance, Mahomes had only six snaps in the Chiefs' 2024 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars—a performance consistent with his previous preseasons, where he recorded merely a handful of snaps in 2023, 2022, and 2021's openers as well.

Is Limited Action A Reason for Concern? Not for Mahomes! ✌️

Despite the limited action, Mahomes is unphased.

“I don’t necessarily look forward to getting hit, but I always like to experience it at least once,” Mahomes stated. He acknowledged the formidable challenge that comes from practicing against defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's schemes, but he remains excited.

“It’s a strong defense we’re facing, and they have a solid coaching staff. I’m eager to see how we measure up. I hope to get in for a couple of series and put our best foot forward,” he added.

Advice for Rookies: Seize the Opportunity

With the starters expected to exit early during Saturday's contest, Mahomes emphasized the importance for rookies and first-year players to perform to the best of their abilities.

“I think it comes down to executing what they’ve shown in camp,” he mentioned. “Sure, this will be a larger stage—competing against another team—but Coach Reid provides an excellent preparation environment. We practice hard and fast, so the transition to the game feels natural.”

Mahomes underlined the significance of maintaining a positive mindset and playing assertively: “Head out there as you practice, maintain the right mentality, and let your skills shine.”

A Special Guest: Terrell Owens Spotted! 🎉

Among the highlights of practice was the appearance of Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens. Having played under Reid's guidance during his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, Owens brought star power and veteran insight to the practice field.

“It’s fantastic to have him here,” Reid said fondly. “Watching him evolve over the years has been rewarding. He's a father now—a proud dad with a son playing well with the 49ers and a daughter excelling in volleyball. It’s nice to see people flourish.”

Team Participation Updates 🚑

In terms of physical conditions, cornerback Kristian Fulton has transitioned off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, marking his return to the practice field, although he participated solely in individual drills.

Reid also mentioned linebacker Drue Tranquill, returning from an injury, participating only in some individual workouts. Both Fulton and Tranquill later moved off to the side with athletic trainers for additional attention.

On the injury front, notable absences include wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice, along with rookie tight end Jake Briningstool. Reid addressed concerns over defensive tackle Fabien Lovett, who experienced an ankle issue but managed to complete practice. Rookie running back Brashard Smith sustained a minor finger injury, but Reid expressed a positive outlook regarding his condition.

“They’ll take good care of him,” he said. “He should come out just fine.”
