Chiefs Reveal Initial 53-Player Roster for 2025 Season π
KANSAS CITY, Mo. β The Chiefs have announced their initial 53-player roster for the 2025 season, and it's certainly not what many anticipated leading up to the deadline on Tuesday.
Significant Roster Moves βοΈ
In a surprising turn of events, several veterans were released. Defensive tackle Mike Pennel is no longer part of the team, along with cornerback Nazeeh Johnson and tight end Jake Briningstool, both of whom have been moved to injured reserve. Notably, the Chiefs kept an impressive eight wide receivers on their initial roster, demonstrating their commitment to a dynamic passing game.
Additionally, veteran tight end Robert Tonyan was also let go but is expected to be re-signed as early as Wednesday. The team might bring him back to either the practice squad or the official roster, contingent on available space.
Wide receiver Jalen Royals, who missed practice on Tuesday due to knee tendonitis, is not expected to join the injured reserve list. The coaching staff remains optimistic about having him in action next week when they face off against the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. ππ
More Veteran Releases πͺ
Along with Pennel and Tonyan, a few other significant players also found themselves on the way out. Veteran safety Mike Edwards, linebacker Cole Christiansen, and defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu were all released. There are speculations that Christiansen might be re-signed to the practice squad, while the future of Pennel, Tuipulotu, and Edwards with the team remains uncertain.
In total, the Chiefs placed 29 players with less than four years of NFL experience on waivers. This group features numerous prospects, including 2024 sixth-round offensive lineman C.J. Hanson and International Pathway Program offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick. Notable names also include third-year linebacker Cam Jones, quarterbacks Chris Oladokun and Bailey Zappe, and running back Carson Steele.
