Patrick Mahomes Sparks Electrifying Reunion as Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals Storm Back to Chiefs Practice!

Happy 30th Birthday, Patrick Mahomes! 🎉

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, marked his 30th birthday on Wednesday in a unique way, as he welcomed back wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Jalen Royals to practice. This occasion also served as a refreshing moment for the team as they begin to regain some of their weapons who had been sidelined due to injuries.

Welcome Back to Practice! 🙌

Worthy, who sustained a shoulder injury in a collision with tight end Travis Kelce during the season opener, and Royals, who was dealing with a knee injury sustained during training camp, have faced challenges on their road to recovery. Thankfully, after Worthy managed to practice a bit late last week, coach Andy Reid announced on Wednesday that both players would participate fully in preparations for the game against the New York Giants coming up on Sunday night.

“I’m just excited to get those guys back and, you know, go out there and try to have some success on offense better than we did last week,” said Mahomes, who is navigating through an uncharacteristically rough start to his season with the winless Chiefs.

Mahomes has completed only 58.8% of his passes and averaged 222.5 yards passing during losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. A combination of inconsistent protection from the offensive line—where the franchise has invested significant financial and draft resources—and the absence of key wide receivers has contributed to these challenges.

Challenges Ahead 🚧

Alongside the injuries to Worthy and Royals, Rashee Rice is currently serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The absence of these three promising wide receivers has affected the overall dynamics of the team.

Marquise Brown has been the only pass catcher to step up, accumulating more than six receptions, even including Kelce, who experienced a tough game. In their recent rematch against the Eagles, a touchdown pass surprisingly slipped out of Kelce's hands, leading to an interception at the goal line.

This season has drawn parallels to the previous year, where similar challenges arose when Rice sustained a season-ending knee injury and Brown had a shoulder injury that sidelined him for almost the entire season. During that tumultuous time, Worthy emerged as a significant player, exceeding expectations and playing a critical role in the offseason plans for the offense.

“I think more than anything, having him out there is a threat in general,” Mahomes commented. “He can take a short or long pass and turn it into a scoring opportunity at any moment. Having him on the practice field was very encouraging last week. After the injury in Brazil, we weren’t sure how long he’d be out, but seeing him out there—he wanted to stay out there! We were kind of holding him back. Let’s hope for a good week of practice.”

Royals, selected in the fourth round of the draft from Utah State, adds another layer of potential to this recovering offense.

The Road Ahead 🏈

While Worthy portrays game-breaking speed, Royals brings a similar style of shifty quickness reminiscent of Rice. This would make him a reliable option to absorb some of the workload caused due to the suspension of Rice over the first six weeks of the season.

“We’ll just see how he does,” said Reid. “He’s been out for a while. We’ll see how he comes around.”

On a more personal note, it seems that Mahomes didn't have many big plans for his birthday celebration. The tough start to the season has cast a shadow over his special day, marking his first 0-2 start since his high school days.

“It’s always hard to have a birthday in general—especially this year with the losses,” Mahomes shared. “But being early in the season, you’re so focused on football and trying to get going in the right direction. We celebrated in the offseason; I hung out with my friends who I grew up with. I’m a little ahead of them, but they’re now starting their jobs and having kids, and it’s cool to see all those changes.”

When asked about turning 30, Mahomes commented, “I’ve been saying, I’ve got kids, man! I’ve been 30 forever!”

Injury Updates & Looking Forward ✔️

In terms of the team's overall health, it's worth noting that defensive end Mike Danna (quad) and cornerback Kristian Fulton (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday. Coach Reid also dismissed any thoughts about "load management" for Kelce, especially considering his slow start to the season.

“We try to monitor him the best we can, but I don't think it’s an age thing or anything,” Reid stated.

As the Chiefs gear up for their important matchup against the Giants on Sunday night, the return of Worthy and Royals could provide the offensive spark the team desperately needs. With Mahomes at the helm and a renewed sense of hope and coordination among the players, fans are eager to see what unfolds in the next chapter of the season. Let’s rally behind the team and celebrate good football to come! 🥳🏆
